Flamingo Music is one of Calgary’s fastest growing private music studios. The story starts in 2006 when instructor Challena Zellick discovered she had two passions and a full time job in sales. Teaching and music didn’t go well with sales, so after her now former music teacher told her she could have a future as a music instructor, she began to offer music to a small group of beginners. By 2007, she was able to quit her full time job (which she didn’t really like) and concentrate on music. Teaching private lessons from her home studio, she offered piano and flute lessons, while working as an instructor for Creative Kids - a music/movement class for moms and tots, as well as a preschool music theory class. In 2008, Creative Kids and Challena parted ways, and she was then able to offer expanded lessons in piano, flute, clarinet, and guitar. Currently, her student base is primarily piano and guitar, with some flute and clarinet students. With current students ranging from age 4 to adult, she has had the opportunity to work with many people from as many as 15 (or more) ethnic backgrounds. Recently, she has also begun to offer lessons to children with learning or behavioral challenges after seeing an unfulfilled need. The
rest, as they say, is Rock ‘N’ Roll.
Looking to the immediate future, Challena will be continuing to offer private lessons, with an eye toward adding more disciplines in the future. Lessons will be continued to be offered year round, enabling students to start any time. Day time lessons will continue to be available for homeschool students. Flamingo Music will continue to a place were success is celebrated, achievement is rewarded, encouragement and improvement is constant, and students of all ethnic and social backgrounds will be welcomed.
